Gluten-Free, Soy-Free, Oil-Free, Nut-Free, Grain-Free, Vegan (of course!)

Oh, under-appreciated plantains, how I love you! You can make anything from tortillas, to “oatmeal,”to flatbread, to these outrageously delicious and crispy fries! Who wouldn’t completely swoon over the humble plantain?!

May I just declare that you are going to fall head over heels for this recipe! Sweet, spicy, creamy, crispy, oh-so-delicious, dip-able, can’t-stop-eating, goodness!! With the sweet plantain coated with Jamaican jerk seasoning, then dipped into a creamy, spicy, cilantro-y, citrusy Mojo sauce, you will hardly be able to hand the flavor explosion!

What is Mojo sauce, you may be thinking? Mojo sauce is a thin marinade, commonly used for Cuban and Caribbean cooking, that contains garlic, cilantro, citrus such as lime and orange, cumin, and olive oil. But, being the avocado-lover that I am, I had to go one step further and take my own spin on the classic Mojo sauce by transforming the light marinade into a creamy, dreamy dipping sauce for the plantain fries!

For the Jamaican Plantain Fries:

  • Three large, yellow plantains
  • ½ of a tsp. of garlic powder
  • ½ of a tsp. onion powder
  • ¼ of a tsp. of cinnamon
  • ¼ of a tsp. of allspice
  • ¼ of a tsp. of ground cloves
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • Dash of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of salt and pepper

For the Avocado Mojo Sauce:

  • One large avocado
  • Four large cloves of garlic, minced
  •  of a cup of chopped cilantro
  • The juice from one lime
  • The juice from one orange
  • ¼ of a tsp. of garlic powder
  • ⅛ of a tsp. of onion powder
  • ¼ of a tsp. of cumin
  • Dash of cayenne pepper (or to taste)
  • Pinch of salt and pepper

How to make:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel each plantain, slice them each in half lengthwise, slice the halves in half lengthwise, then chop them into fries.
  3. Place the chopped plantains and the fry spices into the bowl, them mix to evenly coat the plantain pieces.
  4. Bake the fries for 25-30 minutes, or until they are crispy.
  5. While the fries bake, make the Mojo sauce by mashing the avocado, then mixing the remaining sauce ingredients into the mashed avocado until fully combined.
  6. Once the fries have finished baking, remove them from the oven, and serve them with the Mojo sauce.
  7. Enjoy!
